SLAMABAD: Despite retail prices in Islamabad’s open market reaching Rs170 to Rs180 per kilogram, Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain on Monday downplayed claims of soaring costs and dismissed worries over a lack of sugar, according to The News.
Hussain informed the public during a state media broadcast speech that there was enough sugar on hand to meet demand nationwide, attributing the price increase to hoarders and profiteers rather than any formal pricing strategy.
Hussain said, “Under no circumstances will the retail price be allowed to exceed Rs164 per kg, while the ex-mill price is capped at Rs159 per kg.” He also warned that the federal government would take strong action against offenders in coordination with provincial authorities.
