The government has stated that, while it will continue to pursue its net zero targets and a focus on renewables, gas was required as a “back-up” – with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stating that climate goals must be met “in a sustainable manner that does not leave people without energy on a cloudy, windless day.”
Claire Coutinho, Energy Secretary, will describe the plans for new stations in a speech later today, which will involve a complete examination of the power market and legal measures to prepare the facilities for conversion to low-carbon alternatives.
Greenpeace, on the other hand, said the idea would make the country “more dependent on the very fossil fuel that sent our bills rocketing and the planet’s temperature soaring”.
