An intense discussion about whether enough is being done to safeguard medical personnel in the sometimes overcrowded and overworked hospital wards of the most populated country in the world has been reignited by a knife assault on a doctor in India.
Following the stabbing death of a doctor in the southern city of Chennai last week, thousands of medical professionals went on strike, closing private clinics and hospitals.
According to local authorities, oncologist Balaji Jaganathan was attacked by a patient’s family who was dissatisfied with his mother’s care. The doctor is still in stable condition after surviving the attack.
“If we don’t know if we’ll survive ourselves, how are we supposed to treat patients?” asked K. M. Abdul Hasan, president of the Indian Medical Association.
