A World Health Organization (WHO) official told Al Jazeera that over 8,000 patients in Gaza needed to be evacuated for medical treatment.
Dr. Richard Peeperkorn, WHO representative for Gaza and the West Bank, estimated that approximately 6,000 persons needed to be referred for war-related injuries and illnesses.
These people have sustained various trauma injuries, burns, and amputations.
Meanwhile, the remaining 2,000 individuals needed treatment for cancer and other major chronic conditions.
The WHO stated that transporting such patients out of Gaza will alleviate some of the load on doctors and hospitals that are struggling to function in a combat zone.
