The world is experiencing heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, rising temperatures, and severe rains as a result of climate change. With temperatures reaching records, Pakistan is also feeling similar changes. However, how does rising temperatures due to climate change impact the health of expectant mothers and their unborn children?
Professor and gynecologist Nadeem Zuberi of Aga Khan University was interviewed by Geo Digital. He clarified that pregnant women and the fetuses are severely affected by constant temperature changes, possibly putting their lives in jeopardy.
“A woman’s body experiences a number of changes throughout pregnancy. While every organ functions differently, in heatwaves, their breathing patterns alter. Women’s heart rates and oxygen demands alter as they go through the mothering process.”
Medical professionals say that pregnant women are more vulnerable during heatwaves because of these changes in their bodies.”Lack of oxygen affects the baby’s development, increases chances of premature birth, and raises the risk of miscarriage,” stated Dr. Zuberi.
