The CEO of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, rocket manufacturer SpaceX, and owner of social media firm X, Elon Musk, stated in a statement on X that “this is an unacceptable security violation.”
“And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage,” he stated.
Requests for response from Reuters were not immediately answered by Apple or OpenAI.
Earlier in the day, Apple revealed a number of AI features that will be available in its operating systems and apps, as well as a collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its hardware.
Apple claimed to have designed AI with privacy “at the core” and to enable those capabilities with a mix of cloud computing and on-device processing.
“It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!” Musk stated on X.
Ben Bajarin, CEO of consulting firm Creative Strategies, stated that he doubted anyone would follow Musk’s example and that Apple was attempting to inform users that storing data on a device was just as safe as using a private cloud.
