Groups that are concerned that they might be included in the new definition that was unveiled today as part of the government’s new counter-extremism policy are among the signatories.
“This new extremism definition is a solution looking for a problem,” a coalition spokesman continued.
“It targets free speech, one of the most valued pillars of our multicultural democracy.
“Anyone, regardless of faith or political colour should be free to criticise the government of the day without being labelled as ‘extremist'” .
This comes in response to Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, warning that the plans run the risk of “disproportionately targeting Muslim communities”.
