Following a vehement statement by Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan on the floor of the house opposing the demolition of important proposals that would have increased the number of judges in the higher judiciary and the fixed term of the three service chiefs, the National Assembly session was adjourned for an extended period of time.
His comments were made the day after the parliament passed several measures, including the Pakistan Army Amendment Bill, 2024, the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Supreme Court Number of Judges (Amendment) Bill, 2024, with a majority vote despite fierce protests from the opposition.
Ayub, the head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), caused a stir in the House when he described the passing of six measures as a “shameful incident” and referred to the coalition government as a “government of thieves.”
