A lorry carrying gas exploded in the Embakasi district at about 23:30 (20:30 GMT), “igniting a huge ball of fire,” a government spokesperson said. Damage was done to cars, shops, and housing.
A massive fire could be seen burning near apartment buildings in the video. An investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway, and the area has been roped off. The BBC discovered that the event resulted in the arrest of at least one person.
The authorities then clarified that a truck had detonated in the gas plant’s parking yard.
There, as workmen were restocking gas cylinders, there was a blast.
Consequently, the first fire has been contained.
The chief of police in Embakasi, Wesley Kimeto, acknowledged that a kid was among the dead but cautioned that the toll might yet rise.
According to the officials, 271 people—at least 25 of whom were children—were admitted to the hospital.
According to Nairobi Mayor Sakaja Johnson, many of these people received treatment and went back home, but at least 39 of them were sent to different hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries.
Twenty-seven more people had non-life-threatening wounds treated on the spot.
