A press release from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in partnership with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination and the Civil Society Coalition for Climate Change (CSCCC) states that he was presenting at a three-day policy action dialogue titled “Tackling Climate Change Impacts on Cryosphere, Water, Food Security and Disaster Risk Reduction.”
Lt Gen Malik reported a 3 percent yearly glacial melt rate with an extra 16 percent mass loss over the previous five years, as well as a 23.3 percent decline in snow cover between November 2023 and April 2024.
While melting would temporarily result in extra water, he cautioned that the long-term effects were grave and needed immediate care.He emphasized that the cryospheric situation must be addressed through a regional strategy.
