Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has drawn attention to concerning patterns in glacier melt and the frequency of disasters in Pakistan.
Speaking at a seminar sponsored by the National Commission on the Status of Women, he disclosed that at least 3% of the nation’s glaciers are experiencing abrupt thawing, accounting for almost 23% of the total.
A National Think Tank and a National Emergency Response Center have been established as a result of the terrible floods of 2022, Lt Gen Malik stressed. Many lessons have been learned from these events.
He mentioned that there have already been forest fires and rapid glacier melting in Pakistan in 2024. The frequency of natural disasters has increased by 3–4% as a result of these environmental changes.
