The ship, which sank in 1915 and is now located 3,000 meters below the surface of the Weddell Sea, is seen for the first time, seeming as though the murky water has been removed.
When the ship was discovered in 2022, 25,000 high-resolution photos were used to create the digital scan.
It is available now as a part of the recently published Endurance documentary, which is slated to be screened in theaters.
Every little piece that reveals a narrative connecting the past to the present has been meticulously searched for by the team.
The dishes that the crew used for meals each day are visible in the image below, where they are left strewn all over the deck.
The crew’s home ship, the ship that was lost to the ice, prompted expedition photographer Frank Hurley to fire the flare cannon.
Dr. John Shears, the expedition leader who discovered Endurance, says, “Hurley gets this flare gun, and he fires the flare gun into the air with a massive detonator as a tribute to the ship.”
Then he mentions placing it on the deck in the diary. And there we are. When we return more than a century later, the flare rifle is still there—how amazing.
