An additional 1,000 personnel have been dispatched to the archipelago, in addition to the 1,700 already deployed, after France declared a state of emergency to combat the turmoil, which included a curfew and a ban on TikTok.
Five people, including two police officers, were killed in the violence that erupted following protests against voting reforms pushed through by French President Emmanuel Macron’s administration.
During the skirmishes, at least 60 members of the security forces were injured and 214 individuals were arrested, along with burning and looting.
While the situation has calmed down, conflicts have remained in the capital Noumea, according to France’s high commissioner Louis Lefranc.
