The capital of Greenland is a small city with ambitious goals. With the official opening of the new Nuuk International Airport on November 28, large planes will soon be able to land here. By June, there will be twice-weekly connections from New York in addition to direct flights from Copenhagen. Costing around $800 million (£615 million), it is the first of three airport developments aimed at opening up this Arctic region to tourists.
It’s difficult to imagine the size of the world’s largest island, which covers over two million square kilometers. With a population of less than 57,000, it is one of only 11 countries larger than Texas and Alaska combined. Eighty percent of its land mass is covered by an ice sheet at its frozen core.
