Nezha 2 recently outperformed Pixar’s Inside Out 2 at the worldwide box office, making a big effect.
The Chinese cartoon hit has made a total of 12.3 billion yuan ($1.69 billion), including pre-sales and overseas earnings, according to figures from ticketing site Maoyan. This puts it in the top eight highest-grossing movies globally.
Unlike Hollywood, which depends on a worldwide distribution plan, mainland China has accounted for almost 99% of Nezha 2’s revenue.
Based on the 16th-century Chinese tale The Investiture of the Gods, which centers on a magical hero kid who protects the fortress town of Chentangguan, the movie is a follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Nezha.
