Enzo Fernandez, a midfielder for Chelsea in the Premier League, has been hit with sanctions by the team after sharing a video on social media that the French Football Federation claimed contained “racist and discriminatory language.”
The video features multiple Argentina players celebrating their 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final, while also featuring a song originally performed by Argentina fans that questions the ancestry of France’s black and mixed-race players. The world regulatory organization Fifa is also looking into the incident.
The captain of France during their 2018 World Cup victory and player with the most caps, Lloris, expressed his disbelief at the actions.
“It doesn’t matter if you are in a moment of euphoria because you have won an important trophy,” he stated. “Being a winner carries additional responsibilities.
“Things like these shouldn’t be said or seen in football. We are all opposed to racism and bigotry.
