STOCKHOLM: American scientists David Baker, John Jumper, and Briton Demis Hassabis were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on Wednesday for their work figuring out how to break down protein structures and make new ones, which has helped in drug research, among other things.
Baker received half of the medal “for computational protein design,” and Hassabis and Jumper split the other half “for protein structure prediction,” according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which bestows the honors.
While Hassabis, 48, is CEO of Google DeepMind, the AI research division of Google, where Jumper, 39, also has a senior research scientist position, Baker, 62, teaches at the University of Washington in Seattle.
