According to Yonhap News service, which cited a notification from South Korea’s spy service, an injured North Korean soldier who was taken prisoner by Ukrainian forces has passed away.
The man is thought to be the first North Korean POW taken into custody since Pyongyang sent troops to aid Russia in the conflict in Ukraine.
In a separate statement, the White House said that North Korean forces were suffering from widespread losses and that 1,000 of its soldiers had been killed or injured in the Russian area of Kursk in the previous week.
Seoul and Kyiv claim that North Korea has sent over 10,000 troops to support Russia; however, neither Pyongyang nor Moscow have acknowledged or disputed their deployment.
