Just before halftime, with the score tied at one, Maddison caught Yates.
The video assistant referee (VAR) did not step in and referee Simon Hooper spoke with both Maddison and Yates without carding either player.

“I was shocked that Maddison wasn’t dismissed by VAR. Maddison lost her nerve and gave Yates a stomach punch.
“What they distinctly observed differs from what we observed. If I wasn’t positive, I wouldn’t say anything.”
