Before club owner John Fisher announced plans to move the franchise to Las Vegas, about 47,000 people attended the game.
The Oakland Coliseum has been home to Major League Baseball’s nine-time World Series champions for the past 56 seasons.
Although supporters acknowledge that the stadium needs extensive renovations, they strongly disagree with the club’s intention to relocate from California to neighboring Nevada, which is 550 miles away.
Following attempts to find land in the vicinity to build a new stadium, Fisher wrote a letter to supporters on Monday stating that all alternatives had been explored.
Mark Kotsay, the athletics manager, acknowledged individuals who would lose their positions as a result of the change and expressed gratitude to those who have given their all to the team.
“I want to keep this short, because I don’t really know if I’m gonna be able to make it through this,” Kotsay said.
“I will always be grateful to the Oakland A’s staff members who give their all, especially to those who aren’t traveling with us. I will always remember you.”
While their stadium in Las Vegas is being built, the A’s—who will retain their name—will play in Sacramento for the next three seasons.
