Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned founder of the PKK, has called for the disbandment of the Kurdish terrorist group, which Iraq has welcomed as a step toward enhancing regional security and peace.
Tension between Baghdad and Ankara has frequently arisen because of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has led an insurgency against the Turkish government for decades.
Ocalan called for the group to disarm, which Iraq’s foreign ministry described as “a positive and important step towards achieving stability in the region” in a statement late Thursday.
According to the ministry, it might help “enhance security not only in Iraq, but in the entire region.”
“Political solutions and dialogue are the best way to resolve differences and end conflicts,” the statement emphasized.
