Remarkable Cuban wrestler Mijain Lopez has achieved success once more.
Five gold medals in a row for the superheavyweight Greco-Roman events: Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and now, at Paris 2024, after not having competed since the last Olympic Games three years ago.
After Lopez’s impressive 6-0 victory over Acosta of Chile, he took off his shoes and placed them on the mat to signal his retirement. It was a fitting farewell to an outstanding career.
China’s Meng Lingzhe and Iran’s Amin Mirzazadeh were awarded bronze.
Lopez now owns five consecutive Olympic gold medals in an individual event, making this victory historic. It has never been done before in any city previously, including Beijing, London, Rio, Tokyo, or Paris.
