Up until now, Mr. Sunak had stated that his “working assumption” was that an election would take place in the second part of this year, although he had not ruled out a May date.
A May election has been demanded by opposition parties, with Sir Keir Starmer of Labour accusing the prime minister of “delaying” and “hiding from the public” the obvious.
