In 2021, metal detectorist Peter Heads found around 800 objects, which were dubbed the Melsonby hoard. The hoard was found in two ditches close to the same-named settlement in North Yorkshire.
After Heads informed the authorities of the discovery, Durham University professor Tom Moore, head of archaeology, was summoned to the site, according to news.
Moore claimed that the fact that the discovery was a “once-in-a-lifetime discovery” became evident very fast.
According to the archeologist, the Melsonby hoard’s magnitude and scope are unprecedented for Britain and most likely even Europe.
