On the eve of a catastrophe that claimed the lives of hundreds of migrants off the coast of Greece, protesters were scheduled to gather in Athens on Friday. They demanded information regarding the causes of the tragedy as well as the whereabouts of their relatives.
In Libya, up to 700 migrants from Egypt, Syria, and Pakistan were jammed onto a fishing ship headed for Italy. When it capsized on June 14, 2023, off the southwest coast of Greece, the Greek coast guard had been watching it for hours.
Only 82 dead were found, out of the approximately 104 survivors that were saved. One of the deadliest Mediterranean boat tragedies ever, the incident prompted serious concerns about the European Union’s efforts to control the influx of migrants.
“My nightmares wake me up.” My body hurts until now, I swear to God,” remarked Mohamed, an Egyptian victim. God alone is the reason we are here. “Where are the remaining bodies located?”
Rallies in Athens, London, Paris, and Berlin were being organized by survivors and activists. A memorial event was organized by the victims’ relatives in the Pakistani city of Lalamousa.
