Britons have been warned to “remain vigilant” as they head online to book deals for the summer and next bank holidays. The average victim of a vacation scam loses £765.
Scammers prey on customers by using similar platforms to trick them into purchasing bogus goods or tickets.
The bank says con artists usually fabricate ads for cheap flights or trick credulous people into believing they are selling airline tickets that they are unable to use.
To change the ticket’s name, they will make a lowball offer and demand payment.
The victim will be left without money and without a ticket as soon as the con artist disappears after receiving the money.
