As the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025 cruised through the National Assembly today, the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the journalistic community voiced grave concerns and declared their opposition on Thursday.
After the opposition parties staged a walkout, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain presented the bill in the lower house, and it was adopted within minutes. After the bill was passed, journalists also left the press gallery.
The “Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025” draft had tougher penalties for spreading “false” information, new definitions, and the creation of regulatory and investigative agencies.
According to a report, the administration wants to reduce the penalty for disseminating “fake information” online to three years.
