Naomi Osaka, a two-time champion, was forced to retire from the Australian Open due to an injury sustained during her match against Belinda Bencic in the third round.
Osaka of Japan was participating in the Grand Slam third round for the first time since she returned from maternity leave the previous year.
After soaring to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, the four-time major champion seemed to be struggling with an abdominal issue and called for a physio at 6-5.
Bencic dominated the tiebreak, and Osaka continued to lose. The 27-year-old chose to retire the day before the second set began.
