According to accounts, an active US Air Force member set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC on Sunday in protest of the Gaza conflict.
The US capital’s fire service issued a notification on X, indicating that they received a “call for person on fire outside the Israeli Embassy” and that emergency services arrived just before 1pm (1800 GMT).
When they arrived, they discovered that the fire had already been extinguished by agents from the US Secret Service, a law enforcement agency tasked with protecting visiting heads of state and other influential Americans.
According to the fire department, the man was taken to the hospital with “critical life-threatening injuries”.
A spokesman informed AFP that he is a current member of the Air Force, but did not provide any other information.

An Israeli embassy spokeswoman stated that the individual was “unknown” to them and that no staff members were injured in the incident.
According to the American media, the man livestreamed himself on Twitch while dressed in fatigues and pledged to “not be complicit in genocide” before bathing himself in liquids.
Then he began screaming, “Free Palestine!” and set himself on fire, collapsing to the ground.
The horrific episode occurred at a time when anti-Israel sentiment is on the rise in the United States as a result of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, where it is fighting in retribution for a Hamas attack on October 7.
The world has been putting more and more pressure on the United States to bring down its partner Israel and demand a ceasefire as the number of deaths in Gaza approaches 30,000.
