Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said Thursday that while Pakistan values its relationship with the United States, there were various misunderstandings about Pakistan’s election regulations during a Congressional subcommittee hearing the day before.
“During the meeting of the American committee yesterday, there were several misunderstandings regarding Pakistani election laws,” the spokesperson said during a weekly news briefing for the FO today.
A day earlier, Donald Lu, US Assistant Secretary of State, testified as a key witness at a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing titled ‘Pakistan After the Elections: Examining the Future of Democracy in Pakistan and the US-Pakistan Relationship’.
During the hearing, Lu urged for an investigation into the claims of electoral fraud and stated that the US is closely monitoring the probe into the rigging.He also noted “undue restrictions on free expression and peaceful assembly” during the February 8 elections.
