The first poliovirus case of 2025 in Pakistan was reported by the National Emergency Operation Center on Wednesday, and it came from the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The NEOC also said that 11 polio cases were reported in the DI Khan area in 2024, out of 73 confirmed cases nationwide.
On February 3, the first nationwide vaccination campaign of the year will begin in an effort to combat the alarming increase in polio infections.
“Polio teams will specifically target the affected regions of the country, including DI Khan,” the NEOC added.
With 27 verified cases, Balochistan was the most affected province in Pakistan in 2024; KP and Sindh each reported 22 instances.
In the meantime, one poliovirus case was reported in Punjab and Islamabad in the preceding year.
