ISLAMABAD Muhammad Aurangzeb, the federal minister of finance, expressed worry about Pakistan’s disproportionate tax burden while announcing on Thursday that artificial intelligence will be used to boost tax collection.
The minister raised concerns about the retail sector’s lack of contribution to the national exchequer by stating that, despite accounting for a substantial 19% of the nation’s GDP, the sector only pays 1% in taxes at a conference on “Retail Reimagined: Innovate, Collaborate & Thrive” hosted by the Pakistan Retail Business Council (PRBC).
He emphasized that it is unsustainable for the manufacturing, services, and salaried classes to bear an excessive tax burden.
“We must include other industries in the tax system, such as wholesale, retail, real estate, and agriculture.”
