ISLAMABAD: Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), emphasized on Friday that parliament is the only body that can revoke the 26th Constitutional Amendment. He said that any attempt by any institution to do so would not be tolerated.
In an address to reporters in Islamabad, he asked the justices of the Supreme Court to support one another’s work rather than put up barriers.
He reaffirmed that parliament alone has the power to repeal the 26th Amendment.
The opposition and the legal community strongly opposed the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which established constitutional benches, altered the chief justice’s appointment process, and set the post’s tenure. Many of them even challenged the contentious amendment in the highest court.
