Two Pakistani army commanders, Majors Mian Raza Shah and Shah Nawaz, were killed in separate operations near the border on the first day of the 1965 war between Pakistan and India.
The assignment to take over the village of Chak Pandit in the Chamb area close to Muzaffarabad fell to 28-year-old Major Raza Shah. His tank was struck by enemy fire during the operation, which led to his martyrdom.
Major Shah Nawaz took part in a counteroffensive against Indian soldiers in Chamb, Jaurian, and Akhnur the same day. The enemy artillery put up a fierce fight, but Major Shah Nawaz’s company made progress toward their goal. He was wounded by machine gun fire during the fierce struggle that followed and eventually lost consciousness.
