Four beaches in or close to Tenby, Pembrokeshire, have been designated as being in a “abnormal situation” by Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
According to NRW, there has been a “pollution incident” in the River Ritec close to Tenby.
The Welsh government provides support to the organization, which is responsible for managing Wales’s natural resources.
NRW was notified by Welsh Water that a rising main had burst, allowing sewage to reach the river.
At Tenby South Beach, the river empties into the ocean.
The water company reported that the pipe repair work was “proving challenging”.
Additionally, Castle Beach, Tenby North Beach, and Penally Beach are also under warning.
The website Around Tenby describes two of the impacted beaches as having blue flags, signifying their cleanliness. Tenby is a well-liked tourist resort.
Natural Resources Wales’s duty manager, Andrea Winterton, reported that the pipe near Tenby had been “isolated”.
