KARACHI: The Sindh government said on Saturday that the province will soon see the introduction of Pakistan’s first electric taxis.
According to a tweet on X, formerly Twitter, Sindh Minister for Information, Excise, Narcotics, and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon, “Pakistan’s first EV taxis and Pink EV taxis will be started by Transport Department Government of Sindh soon.”
The declaration is made at a time when Karachi, the main city in the province, is experiencing high levels of air pollution as a result of an excessive number of cars with gasoline engines and what is arguably an inadequate mass transit infrastructure.
The minister did not, however, provide a date for the introduction of EVs in Sindh.
Because of the skyrocketing cost of fuel, which has led to high fares charged by various online ride-hailing apps and significant expenses for owners of private vehicles, the introduction of electric vehicle (EV) taxis is expected to not only address the issue of air pollution but also potentially offer a different and hopefully less expensive commute option to the general public.
Additionally, as more nations attempt to move away from fossil fuels, the advent of electric vehicles is in keeping with the worldwide trend and shift towards environmentally friendly automobiles.
30 hybrid and 50 electric buses were added to the Peoples Bus Service fleet earlier this year, bringing the total number of vehicles operated in Karachi to 300.
