When it was revealed that Haigh had entered a guilty plea to a fraud charge ten years prior, she resigned. It was alleged that she informed Sir Keir of this past in 2020, when he appointed her to his shadow cabinet.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch questioned the prime minister’s choice of a “convicted fraudster” to be his transport secretary during Prime Minister’s Questions.
Haigh was correct to step down “when new information came to light,” according to Sir Keir.
However, in response to Badenoch’s request for more information regarding the new evidence, he said, “I’m not going to disclose private information.”
He accused Badenoch of being “obsessed with the Westminster issues” and noted that Haigh’s quick departure was a “marked contrast” to the actions of the previous Conservative government.
