It seems that Miriam Cates is referring to the 14-year-old girl who is thought to have committed suicide.
During Prime Minister’s Questions today, former educator Miriam Cates presented the argument to Rishi Sunak.
“Time to consider banning social media and perhaps even smartphones for under 16s?” she asked, citing a “marked increase” in poor adolescent mental health since 2010.
It seemed as though Ms. Cates brought up the case of 14-year-old Mia Janin, who is thought to have committed suicide.
When she was a Year 10 student at the Jewish Free School in Kenton, London, her father, Mariano Janin, believes that she was the victim of online bullying from other students.
A youngster who was present at the inquest into her death stated that male students at the school used a Snapchat group to ridicule Mia after she shared a post on TikTok.
“This morning, the press reported the tragic case of a 14-year-old girl who took her own life following horrific social media bullying, including on TikTok and Snapchat,” Ms. Cates stated during her speech in the Commons.
“Since 2010, there has been a noticeable rise in children who are addicted to pornography, poor mental health among teenagers, and teen suicide attempts throughout the English-speaking world.
“There is a long history of legislation in the UK safeguarding children from grave risks to their welfare and safety.
