According to authorities, a man brandished a knife at a market square in Mannheim, a city in southwest Germany, attacking many people.
A policeman arrived to assist the man after the attacker had stabbed him, as seen in a YouTube livestream of the incident. His health is seriously compromised.
Another police officer shot and injured the attacker.
Unverified rumors claim that a far-right anti-Islamic activist who was conducting a rally in the square was among those hurt.
A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the location, and Mannheim police tweeted about a “major police operation” in the city’s market square.
At 11:35 (10:35 BST), authorities reported that one individual had attacked multiple people with a knife, wounding them.
It is thought that far-right anti-Islamic activist Michael Stürzenberger arranged a demonstration in the market square at the same time as the attack.
The Bild newspaper received confirmation from his organization, the Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa (BPE), that Mr. Stürzenberger sustained injuries during the incident.
The police have not released any additional information about the victims of the attack.
