Following the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a coalition partner, has also submitted a review appeal against the Supreme Court’s decision to award the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) reserved seats.
Farooq H. Naek filed the case on behalf of the PPP, attempting to reverse the July 12 ruling of the supreme court regarding the allocated seats for women and non-Muslims.
The PPP contested the PTI’s claim to the reserved seats in their appeal, claiming that the former ruling party had not made any such claim.
On July 15, the PML-N appealed the same ruling in the Supreme Court with a review petition. Among the questions posed in the review petition was whether the reserved seats should go to the SIC.The ruling not only made it possible for the PTI to rejoin the parliament after it was disqualified from the polls on February 8 due to a ruling by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in December 2023, but it also put more pressure on the coalition alliance by altering the makeup of the National Assembly.
The 8-5 majority decision stated that the commission has a constitutional obligation to apply all statutory provisions appropriately and that the absence or denial of an election symbol has no bearing whatsoever on a political party’s constitutional or legal rights to run candidates in a general or by election.
