JACOBABAD: According to an NGO, US President Donald Trump’s freeze on foreign aid threatens the essential supply of fresh and filtered water that can cool the scorching heat of climate change in Pakistan’s hottest metropolis.
Sun-dried heatwaves in Jacobabad can occasionally reach temperatures beyond 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), leading to serious health issues like heat stroke and dehydration.
A $66 million grant from USAID was pledged in 2012 to improve Sindh’s municipal services, which included the major refurbishment of a plant that pumps and purifies water from a canal 22 kilometers distant.
The initiative is at risk “within a few months” because Trump’s assistance embargo has blocked $1.5 million intended to make the plan long-term feasible, according to non-profit HANDS.
