After the lower house of parliament was reopened after being dissolved during the election, Sir Keir addressed the assembly after Sir Lindsay Hoyle was elected Speaker of the House of Commons without opposition.
For the first time since guiding the Conservatives to an electoral defeat, Rishi Sunak also spoke in front of the assembly.
“Mr Speaker elect, you preside over a new parliament, the most diverse parliament this country has ever seen by race and gender,” Sir Keir said in his speech.
And I’m proud of the roles that all the parties have played in that, including the one that my party has played.
Including the largest group of LGBT+ MPs from any parliament in the world in this intake.
Then, he paid respect to Diane Abbott, the mother of the House and the longest-serving female MP in history; he made no mention of the internal party squabbles around her eligibility to represent Labour in the election.
Mr. Sunak spoke in the Commons after his successor in Number 10.
Speaking, the new opposition leader stressed the need to keep in mind that, despite “vigorous” debate, politicians in this House will never lose sight of the reality that, at their core, we are all driven by the same goals: serving our citizens, our nation, and advancing the ideals that do it.
