Ahead of this Saturday’s Armed Forces Day, the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers, which assists military children who have lost a parent, conducted an interview with the Duke of Sussex, during which he also shares his personal feelings about losing his mother.
When Nikki’s husband Corporal Lee Scott, a member of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, passed away in July 2009, she had to break the news to her five-year-old son Kai and take care of their seven-month-old daughter Brooke.
She tells Harry in a devastating conversation, “It was the worst. How do you explain this to a five-year-old?
‘Kai, do you remember where Daddy was?’ I asked him as I picked him up and sat him on the bed. “Yeah, Afghan,” he replied, and I responded, “Something really bad has happened, the baddies have hurt dad and he’s died because he used to play army.”
She sobbed as she spoke of the anguish of “shattering her son’s world”.
In an effort to aid other kids, Nikki founded Scotty’s Little Soldiers in 2010 as a result of her own personal tragedy. As the organization’s global ambassador, Prince Harry was captured on a May visit to the UK, where he delighted kids at a Scotty’s event.
