The gowns, which were worn by the late Princess of Wales in the 1980s, are the most valuable pieces in a collection that is being auctioned in Los Angeles along with more than 200 items from the Royal Family and some of her correspondence, accessories, and mementos.
It is the largest collection of Diana’s personal items up for auction, according to Julien’s Auctions, since she sold dozens of garments at a charity auction in New York in 1997, just before her passing.
Two months before to her demise in an automobile accident, two gowns were auctioned at the New York auction.
Diana wore the first gown—a strapless, dark blue tulle gown designed by Murray Arbied—two times in 1986, once to the Phantom of the Opera premiere and once to a luncheon with King Constantine of Greece. The second occasion was a Cinderella performance at the Royal Opera House.
It is valued at a maximum of $400,000 (£315,000), just like the magenta evening gown by Victor Edelstein made of silk and lace that Diana donned in 1987 when visiting London and Germany.
