Pritam Singh, the opposition leader of Singapore, was convicted of lying before a parliamentary committee while under oath.
For each of the two offenses, a court issued a maximum fine of S$7,000 ($5,223; £4,148). Singh declared that he would file an appeal against the verdict and punishment.
In a another case, Singh was accused of lying to parliament about Raeesah Khan, a former politician from his party.
Singapore is preparing for its upcoming general election, which must take place by November, when the verdict in this well-known trial was rendered. Nine of the 87 elected seats in parliament are held by Singh’s Workers’ Party.
According to Singapore’s constitution, if an MP is penalized at least once, they risk losing their seat or being disqualified from running for office for five years.
