According to sources verified on Monday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has agreed to extend the grace period for unregistered Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) till November 30.
The ruling coincides with growing worries about the improper use of unapproved VPNs for illegal purposes, such as getting around internet filters and accessing blocked material.
PTA sources claim that the extended deadline enables unregistered VPN users to meet the conditions for mandatory registration.
The PTA will begin a national assault on unregistered VPNs on December 1.
To guarantee preparedness for the full-scale shutdown, a second VPN blocking trial is scheduled in the next few days after the first one was completed successfully.
