Barrister Ali Zafar, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was named a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Wednesday. The JCP is the judicial body that appoints judges to the higher courts, and Zafar will serve as the opposition’s representative there.
Following discussions with the opposition leader, Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani named Barrister Zafar a member of the JCP.
In accordance with PTI founder Imran Khan’s instructions, PTI Senator Shibli Faraz submitted his resignation and selected Zafar to replace him on the 13-member panel.
The “earnest desire to contribute meaningfully towards the betterment of the judicial system in the country and striving to uphold the principles of justice” was Senator Faraz’s statement upon his resignation.
