A blackout that nearly engulfed the whole island plunged Puerto Rico into darkness early Tuesday morning.
The primary power distributor on the island, Luma Energy, said preliminary investigations indicated a failure in an underground line, but the reason of the outage is still being investigated. According to the company on X, it can take 24 to 48 hours to fully restore service.
At roughly 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT), the New York Times reported that only 13 percent of the island’s 1.4 million clients had power.
According to Luma, power had been restored to several districts including the municipal hospital in San Juan one hour later.
Following the blackout on New Year’s Eve, residents and government authorities once again called for attention to the unincorporated US territory’s persistent electricity problems.
