Washington Sundar helped bowl New Zealand out for 259 on the opening day of the second Test in Pune on Thursday, taking seven wickets.
In Test cricket, the off-spinner’s remarkable 7-59 was his maiden five-wicket haul. He was thankful for the chance, saying, “I will never forget this day.”
With skipper Rohit Sharma down for a nine-ball duck, India ended the day at 16-1, 243 runs behind New Zealand. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were at the crease with scores of ten and six, respectively.
After winning the toss, Devon Conway (76) and Rachin Ravindra (65), who put on 62 runs for the third wicket before Sundar changed the tide, gave New Zealand strong contributions. Support was provided by fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
