LAHORE: Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced on Sunday that the province-wide production, distribution, and trade of plastic will be prohibited as of June 5th, citing plastic as a cause of cancer and other deadly illnesses.
According to a statement from Marriyum, a crackdown on the factories producing the illicit goods will begin on June 5 since the usage of plastic was increasing environmental degradation.
The Punjab government is taking action against plastic in response to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s order to start the “No to Plastic” campaign.
Under the program, serving meals in plastic bags at hotels and other restaurants would be severely prohibited.
According to reports, the administration has finalized plans to strictly carry out the plastic prohibition strategy.
The Punjab administration resolved on April 19 to start implementing eco-friendly projects in the province in advance of Earth Day in 2024.
The CM had supported a complete ban on the use of plastic bags as part of this campaign, which went into force on June 5.
A review meeting on eco-friendly activities chaired by the Chief Minister of Punjab in April featured a presentation by Marriyum on the campaign’s goal of raising public awareness of the grave health concerns linked to plastic pollution.
She had emphasized how urgent it was to outlaw the manufacture, sale, and use of polythene bags, pointing out that they have a negative influence on the environment and might cause respiratory disorders and other potentially fatal illnesses.
